Warning, Snake found in mailbox in neighborhood

June 4, 2026

Recently, one of our neighbors reported finding a snake in their mailbox! Please be on the lookout for snakes and other wildlife.

What to do in this situation?

If there is a snake in your mailbox, do not reach inside. Step back and do not disturb it. Most snakes found in mailboxes are harmless non-venomous species seeking a warm, dark place to hide. [1, 2]. But, we do have some venomous water moccasins in our neighborhood.
What to do next:
  • Do not try to kill it: In many states, native snakes may be legally protected.
  • Contact a Professional: if you feel threatened or unsafe, call a local wildlife or snake removal specialist, or your local Henry County Police.
  • Keep your pets away: Ensure dogs or cats are secured inside to prevent them from getting bitten or harmed.
  • Contact USPS: If you are expecting important letters, use the USPS Location Finder to contact your local Post Office. They can temporarily hold your mail until the snake is safely relocated. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Please be careful.

As you may know, the Salem Oaks subdivision is being constructed next to our Heritage @ Town Square community. On May 25, 2023, Henry County Zoning Advisory Board will hold a public hearing to discuss a setback variance for 7 lots on that property, A setback variance is a request to allow the property lines for certain lots to differ from county zoning rules. We are not sure why the setback variance is being requested.
